Puerto Rican singer Ruth Fernandez with orchestra director Joe Valle (right corner) on stage at the Caborrojeño Social Club. Ruth Fernandez, known as "El Alma de Puerto Rico Hecha Cancion" ("The Soul of Puerto Rico in Song"), was the first black, female, Puerto Rican singer to perform with a Puerto Rican orchestra, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, NY. Fernandez was also the first Latina singer to record with a North American band. During her career, Fernandez was elected to the Puerto Rican Senate, actively working as a legislator. Written on back of photograph: "Ruth Fernandez en el Club Caborrojeno de Nueva York, 10-17-1956".
