Boricua Hawaiiana exhibit piece

Blase Camacho Souza Papers, 1899-2003

“Puerto Ricans from the island ask me ‘Are you Puerto Rican?’ and I answer: ‘Yes, of course’, then they start rattling off in Spanish and I would say:
- ‘No, no, I don’t speak Spanish’
- ‘But you just said you were Puerto Rican’
- ‘Yea, yea, I am’
- ‘But you don’t speak Spanish?’
- ‘No, I don’t’
- ‘Ah, then you’re not Puerto Rican’
And that’s when I start to boil”
Cathy Montalbo, third generation Hawaiian-Puerto Rican, outside Puerto Rican Social Hall
Honolulu, Hawaii, 1981
