00:00:00 Cruz reflects on her childhood in Caguas with a loving family and wonderful memories. 00:08:47 Cruz discusses her education and work experiences, including graduating from the University of Puerto Rico in 1985. In 1989 she moved to New Jersey and accepted a position as an Assistant Teacher in an adult multi-cultural school. 00:12:30 Cruz reflects on her work with INROADS, a not-for-profit organization working with talented minority youths. After seven years, Cruz was promoted to a manager position placing out of the country interns in local companies. 00:17:00 Cruz shows pride in her Hispanic identity, and has always retained her Spanish language at home. 00:20:02 Cruz states that with INROADS, she traveled extensively and decided to change careers, becoming involved in government committees and working with Commissioner Tony Ortiz. Cruz identified the community needs and in 2016 became the Director of Hispanic Office for Local Assistance (HOLA). 00:27:00 Cruz states the number one issue facing Puerto Ricans in Orlando as problems with housing accommodations. She explains that the waiting list for Section 8 and low rent housing is huge. 00:31:35 Cruz remembers that her awareness of the communities’ need was an eye opener while living in New Jersey, and she started volunteering with food pantries. 00:39:00 Cruz ends by stating that she has shared with her daughter her commitment to the community and she wants to continue working with the community forever.
