Rivera states that her experience in Omaha, NE was a positive one, but that she found the lack of knowledge regarding Puerto Rico disturbing. She attended a college that promoted multi-culturalism, and ended up getting her father to send her brochures about Puerto Rican to explain its culture to her peers. Rivera mentions that she experienced racism and derogatory comments about Puerto Ricans from soldiers stationed at the U.S. Strategic Base Command in Omaha, NE while she was living there.
