Button: Free Cesar Chavez

Buttons Collection, 1930s-1990s (artificial collection)

Button supporting the freeing of Cesar Chavez, who was routinely arrested for fighting for better labor practices for migrant farm workers. The button also was supporting the labor strike by the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and the United Farm Workers against grape growers in California that began on September 8, 1965, and lasted more than five years. The strike was ultimately successful due to grassroots efforts including boycotts, non-violent resistence, community organizing and marches.
